Light Trainer (C172-class)

The forgiving first aircraft: slow, stable and easy to put on the runway.

The Light Trainer approximates the single-engine four-seater that most real pilots learn on. It climbs gently, glides a long way with the engine idle and tolerates clumsy hands, which makes it the right aircraft for your first hours in ChillFlight.

It is also the best aircraft for sightseeing. At about 100 knots the world scrolls slowly enough to follow a coastline, find an airport by its runway lights and watch the weather change around you.

Key Numbers

  • Role: trainer / single piston
  • Approximates: C172
  • Unlocks at: level 0
  • Maximum takeoff mass: 1,157 kg
  • Stall, landing configuration: 48 kt
  • Stall, clean: 53 kt
  • Flaps may be used below: 85 kt
  • Normal operating limit: 129 kt
  • Never exceed: 163 kt
  • Rotate at about: 65 kt
  • Approach at about: 60 kt

Speeds are indicated airspeed in knots as the simulator models them; the real type is only the thing this aircraft approximates.

How It Flies

  • It wants to fly: release the controls in level flight and it settles by itself.
  • Use flaps for takeoff and landing. With flaps down it slows easily and the nose drops gently.
  • Do not chase the pitch. Small, patient inputs work better than big corrections.

What To Practise

  • Take off, climb to 3,000 feet, level off and hold a heading for a minute without touching the keys.
  • Fly a rectangular pattern around the airport and land on the numbers.
  • Land in a crosswind: crab into the wind on final, then straighten with the rudder just before touchdown.
